I am Afnan Khan, a poet and writer who is currently 15 years old and in grade 10 (Port Perry High School). I began my writing journey nearly about 4 years ago, when I was 11 and in the 6th grade of elementary school. I was introduced to poetry at an early age due to a program in my school and have been consistently writing ever since. Throughout these years, I have learned many things, in writing and in general life. I have grown and persevered, I gained experiences and wisdom that has taken me a long way. My form of art is through writing, where I share my deepest emotions and thoughts, although much of it is based off of perspective. I primarily write about my philosophies as well as ongoing issues throughout the world that concern society as well as humanity itself.

I am here to share my story, a message, my goals, and a milestone that I have reached. I am a full-time high school student and a part-time dishwasher at a local restaurant. For the past 2 years, I have been investing my money into fundraising events to raise money for the local food bank in my community to help those in need. At the time, we were thinking about donating $300 to the food bank across my community. To expand on this idea, I had been thinking of ways where we would be able to donate more than double the original amount. After much elaboration, I had proposed an idea that my parents had agreed on to fundraise by cooking dinner meals on the evening of December 3, in exchange for trusting those who booked a meal to donate $10 to the Operation Scugog Food Bank. After posting my idea on the Port Perry Bulletin Community, I had received positive feedback and within 3 hours, all 60 meals were booked by 22 families. The fundraising event had gone according to plan except for a couple obstacles that we had persevered through, in the end, we figured that most people would donate more than $10 per meal which could raise total donations to a larger amount than intended ($1,385 and over $1,000 worth in food items and toiletries for the Operation Scugog Food Bank).

My goal is to spread a message, one that will inspire everyone, especially the younger generations, to come forward and mould this world into a better place for everyone. I want to be an example for others so that they can summon the courage to stand up with me. With my extra money, I managed to publish my first book which is a book of 50 of my very own poems written throughout the years named “Reality, a living lie.” The book went live on Amazon.ca on December 1st and there is a link below if you would like to check it out. December 5th, I hit the status of # 1 Best Seller for the Poetry Anthologies category on Amazon.

I am extremely proud of my accomplishments and so is my family and friends, I can only imagine what else I will manage to do in the future. I hope that one day, I will be able to turn these imaginations into a reality. I will change this world with my writing and words, because the only place to go is forward. I believe that change can be good or bad, every being on this planet has experienced change. Sometimes it can be fruitful, yet at other times its shows to be tragic and hurtful. I think that change teaches us the wrongs of our past and allows us to apprehend the truth. I hope that all of you will join me in this dream towards even more equality and equity.
